# Q&A Interview with Stacey Mrva, Metal Sculptor

__SkillHero:__ Tell us about your journey into metalwork and the trades. Did you have a traditional career in the trades before venturing into teaching and art?

__Stacey Mrva:__ I actually came to welding through art. I was exposed to a lot of different mediums of art in high school which lead me into jewelry making, and then that evolved into studying metal smithing at Syracuse University. There, I fell in love with welding and knew it was what I wanted to do. I was essentially self-taught, as the university just provided the equipment and I learned by doing. After graduating, my parents bought me a Miller 185 welder, which I still use today.

__SkillHero:__ You hear about people with a construction or manufacturing background that develop more creative ways to hone their craft later in their career, but your path is quite unique! Can you tell us more about your journey and how Ironwood Studios and how it came to be?

__Stacey Mrva:__ For over 25 years, I focused on my own artistic and functional metalwork such as custom railings and furniture, but it's feast or famine being an artist. I was working a day job in management in retail, but wanted to find a way to bring in more revenue so I could quit my job and focus on doing the thing I loved and enjoyed - welding.

During the pandemic, my husband and I moved from Rochester to the Finger Lakes, where we found a property with a barn perfect for a metalwork shop. The barn had an ironwood tree growing near it, which felt like destiny, and thus, [Ironwood Studios Inc.](https://ironwoodstudiosinc.com/ "Ironwood Studios website") was born. We envisioned a creative space where people could come, learn, and create. Since then, I've been conducting Women's Welding Workshops and have taught over 600 people in the past two years.

__SkillHero:__ That’s incredible! What kind of projects do your students work on in these workshops?

__Stacey Mrva:__ The workshops are project-based, so everyone leaves with something they've created. The projects are designed to ensure participants feel accomplished. I cater to all different skill levels and walks of life in my shop, from beginners who may be scared to hold a welding torch to those who take to welding naturally. The goal is to build confidence and create a supportive environment where women can learn and thrive.

__SkillHero:__ What skills do you think are most important for someone beginning in welding?

__Stacey Mrva:__ Patience is crucial. Welding is a skill that requires perseverance. It's important to be patient with yourself and not get discouraged by initial failures. Learning by doing and continuous practice are key. Also, having [a supportive community](https://app.skillhero.works/ "SkillHero") can make a huge difference.

__SkillHero:__ Speaking of community, how important is mentorship in welding?

__Stacey Mrva:__ Mentorship is extremely important. When I was younger, I was stubborn and didn’t ask for help, which made things harder. Now, I have mentors who support and advise me, which has been invaluable. __SkillHero:__ What advice would you give to women or underrepresented individuals considering a career in welding or the trades?

__Stacey Mrva:__ The industry is becoming more open to women, but it still requires resilience. You need to be prepared to prove yourself, which can ultimately make you better at what you do. The skills and confidence you gain will be invaluable, and you'll find that you're sought after in your field because of your dedication and hard work.

__SkillHero:__ What are your future goals for Ironwood Studios and your workshops?

__Stacey Mrva:__ We're renovating the barn to create more space for events and possibly overnight workshops where participants can work on larger projects. I also want to develop a funded summer program to offer free workshops for young women, showing them what's possible and building their confidence through welding.

__SkillHero:__ What has been the most rewarding aspect of your career so far?

__Stacey Mrva:__ Teaching has been incredibly fulfilling. Watching people transform from being scared to feeling powerful and accomplished is amazing. Creating public art that people interact with daily is also very rewarding. But nothing beats the feeling of empowering others through teaching.

## Q&A with Drew Huey, Stone Mason
__SkillHero:__ Tell us about your journey in the skilled trades. How did you get started?

__Drew Huey:__ The [Warren County Career Center](https://www.wcsdpa.org/o/wccc "Warren County Career Center website")’s welding program was a game-changer for me. It not only provided a practical skill set and sparked my passion for the trades, but also gave me the extra credits I needed to graduate. I didn’t learn the best in a traditional classroom setting, so a hands-on learning environment was a perfect alternative.
The skills I was taught opened up opportunities, and toward the end of high school, I began working part-time at a construction company applying the skills that I was learning in my welding program. Once I graduated, it evolved into a [full-time welding role](https://app.skillhero.works/career-explorer/trades/welder "SkillHero Career Explorer: Welder").

But for me, after a few years of welding, I was growing tired of it. I admired the mason crew, often seeing them and other tradespeople coming in and out of the yard while I was stuck somewhere working on a weld. My company allowed me to shadow the masons and soon they started taking me along on jobs. My first job with them was working on a huge stone house. It was tough, but through that project I fell in love with masonry.

__SkillHero:__ What aspects of masonry do you find most rewarding?

__Drew Huey:__ Overall, the work is exciting and different every day, and I love the physical and creative aspects of it. The most rewarding part is stepping back at the end of the day and seeing what I’ve accomplished. It’s amazing to see a structure you’ve built from the ground up. Masonry is also a valuable career path because there’s always work—chimneys, foundations, fireplaces. Plus, it’s physically engaging, keeping me fit while continuing to work on my trade.

__SkillHero:__ How did you hone your craft in masonry?

__Drew Huey:__ There was a steep learning curve, especially with measuring and ensuring everything fits perfectly the first time. I remember one of my bosses saying laying stone is easy, but there’s so much more to it—like measuring out so you don’t end up with a weird measurement in the middle, and making sure everything works right.

There’s a lot of math and technique that goes into it, so learning from experienced masons was crucial. My first bosses were tough but taught me a lot about breaking bonds, doing corners, and estimating costs and materials. You can always watch YouTube tutorials, but hands-on experience and learning from seasoned professionals make a huge difference.

__SkillHero:__ What advice would you give to someone interested in masonry?

__Drew Huey:__ Get your hands on some basic tools like a trowel, slicker, and grinder, and start applying for any construction jobs to get your foot in the door. Skilled labor is in high demand. Joining a union [as a trainee or apprentice](https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/authentic-stonework-drew-huey-stone-mason-skillhero-spotlight-nduce/?trackingId=eoiPLoJZyuZMWZFtMj5wuw%3D%3D#:~:text=as%20a%20trainee%20or%20apprentice "SkillHero Opportunities") is another great way to start. Getting involved, asking questions, and learning on the job are key.

When considering specialties, repointing (repairing masonry that’s already done) is a great place to start. It gives you a good idea of how something was created, and through fixing it, you’ll gain an understanding of what could’ve been done better in the first place to improve the quality of the stonework.

__SkillHero:__ How has the industry changed since you started?

__Drew Huey:__ Everything has gotten more expensive, and there’s a shift towards using cheaper materials like stick-on stone, which is like molded concrete made to look like stone. While it’s more affordable and in demand, I prefer working with real stone. It’s more authentic, rewarding and durable. Technology has also advanced, making some tasks easier, but the essence of masonry remains the same.

__SkillHero:__ What’s it like running your own business versus working for someone else?

__Drew Huey:__ There’s pros and cons. Running your own business gives you freedom and the potential for higher earnings, but it comes with a lot of responsibilities and stress. You have to manage materials, handle clients, and ensure everything runs smoothly. Working for someone else is more relaxed—you just show up and do your job without worrying about the logistics, but you earn less.

When I am working for myself, it is a huge mental load. You’re responsible for every step of the job, including financial responsibilities like creating estimates and calculating taxes. But working for someone else, all those things are taken care of.

__SkillHero:__ What are your future plans in masonry?

__Drew Huey:__ I aim to get back into running my own business but with a team. Working alone can be tough, and having a team makes the work more enjoyable and efficient. My brother is a carpenter, and we’re talking about starting a construction company, offering a range of services from masonry to carpentry to welding. My future is all about creating a relaxed, fun, and productive work environment.

## Q&A with Cam, Red Seal Carpenter & Instructor

__SkillHero:__ Cody, could you share how you pivoted from military service to welding?

__Cody:__ I entered the military [as a mechanic](https://app.skillhero.works/career-explorer/trades/heavy-equipment-mechanic), a role that resonated with me partly due to my dad's background in the same field. Once I got out, I was looking for something different. That lead me to [rekindling my interest in welding](https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/skillhero-spotlight-cody-us-army-veteran-structural-steel-m7zee/#:~:text=rekindling%20my%20interest%20in%20welding), which I had first explored in high school. It actually became something that I enjoyed, and ended up going to college for two years to get my associates degree of applied science in welding and fabrication. I graduated last year and started a structural steel fabrication job.

__SkillHero:__ Why did you choose structural steel welding?

__Cody:__ It presented an opportunity to enter the welding industry and offered variety and challenge. From working on simple projects to complex structures, it keeps me engaged and continuously learning.

__SkillHero:__ Did any skills from the military aid in your welding career?

__Cody:__ Absolutely, the hands-on experience and attention to detail in the military were invaluable. In welding, precision is key, and my military background reinforced the importance of getting things right the first time.

__SkillHero:__ How did the GI Bill support your education?

__Cody:__ It was crucial. I utilized the GI Bill for my education post-military. It's a [fantastic resource for veterans](https://www.va.gov/education/about-gi-bill-benefits/), allowing us to transition smoothly into civilian careers with the right training.

__Cody:__ Ask questions and seek out the right training programs. Some veteran’s first step is joining their local union, but even just utilizing the GI Bill can provide an edge in gaining hands-on skills.

__SkillHero:__ With technological advancements, where do you see the future of welding?

__Cody:__ Despite automation and robots, the need for skilled human operators remains critical. Understanding welding fundamentals is essential, as there will always be tasks that require a human touch.

__Cam:__ My journey wasn’t straightforward. I didn't plan to teach carpentry; it just happened to be a door that opened. I bumped into a former teacher who suggested teaching. Initially hesitant, I was eventually persuaded to try teaching at VIU for a “seven week trial period”, and that was seven years ago!

__SkillHero:__ Before VIU, you mentioned a brief stint teaching in elementary education. How did that experience influence your approach to teaching carpentry?

__Cam:__ Teaching early education wasn't what I expected, and lacked the tangible feedback that I crave from carpentry. Carpentry fulfills my need for immediate feedback through the physicality of building. __Cam:__ It's had a huge impact. Growing up, using tools and building were part of life. This background not only influenced my career choice but also how I teach, valuing hands-on experience and the mentorship aspect of learning.

Cam: Seeing the lightbulb moments when students grasp a new concept is incredibly rewarding. Our program allows students to build a house from scratch, offering a tangible sense of accomplishment and a real-world application of their skills.

__SkillHero:__ Could you share a bit about your journey into welding? What initially drew you to the trade and what aspect of being an instructor do you find most rewarding?

__Cal:__ I started welding when I was about 14 and fell in love with it in high school. I knew early on that a traditional desk job wasn't for me. After high school, I dove straight into a trades training program and then worked across various sectors, including construction and sales. But what truly lights my fire is teaching welding. There's nothing quite like seeing a former student thriving and supporting their family through the skills you've taught them.

__SkillHero:__ What are the biggest advantages of trade programs for young individuals? How do these programs shape their futures?

__Cal:__ These programs are crucial. Without them, many students might never discover trades like welding as a viable career path. When I was in school, the push was always towards college, but not everyone fits that mold. Trades offer a tremendous opportunity for those willing to work hard. You gain a skillset that's invaluable and in high demand.

__SkillHero:__ Speaking of valuable skills, what challenges do your students face, and how do you help them navigate these obstacles?

__Cal:__ The biggest challenge is often communication and finding the best way to connect with each student. Since we're a private school, we have the flexibility to tailor our curriculum to meet students' needs, starting with the fundamentals of welding and building from there. It's all about making those connections and helping students see their potential.

__SkillHero:__ That's a great approach. Can you walk us through the fundamentals you emphasize in your welding classes?

__Cal:__ We begin with the basics—safety, setup, rod and wire selection, and polarity. From there, we progress to hands-on welding, teaching students to weld in flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions. The real learning, though, happens when we start working on projects. That's when students really begin to apply what they've learned and hone their skills.

__SkillHero:__ How do apprenticeship programs fit into the picture? How do they prepare your students for the workforce?

__Cal:__ Apprenticeships are key. They offer students a chance to apply their skills in the real world, under the guidance of experienced professionals. In our area, there's a lot of construction and new industries emerging, so there's a tight-knit community working to prepare these students for future opportunities.

__SkillHero:__ That community aspect is so important. With welding offering various career paths, how do you guide your students in choosing the right specialization?

__Cal:__ It's all about where they see themselves in the future. Whether it's pipe welding, structural, or even artistic welding, there are countless paths they can take. The trade is always evolving, with new technologies and techniques emerging, so staying open and curious is crucial.

__SkillHero:__ It's clear the welding trade is advancing. From your perspective, how is it changing, and what does the future hold?

__Cal:__ The field is definitely evolving, with advancements like laser welding and robotic welding becoming more common. However, there will always be a need for skilled welders to oversee these technologies. It's an exciting time, with endless possibilities for those entering the trade.

## Q&A with Steven, Electrician

__SkillHero:__ Steven, you embarked on the electrical trade later in life. What motivated this shift, and how did you overcome the initial challenges?

__Steven:__ Before I shifted careers, I was involved in manufacturing, following in my father's footsteps. However, the demanding hours and lack of fulfillment led me to reconsider my path. After being let go from my job under unfair circumstances, I decided it was time for a change. Despite the significant pay cut, with the support of my wife, I pursued a career as an electrician. Starting at $14 an hour, I quickly progressed, thanks to my hands-on skills and determination.

__SkillHero:__ What challenges did you face in the beginning, and how did you overcome them?

__Steven:__ Understanding blueprints and diagrams was initially challenging. Learning from experienced colleagues who were willing to take me on as an apprentice and mentor me, I gradually honed my skills. My early days were filled with commercial projects, but a job too far from home pushed me toward local opportunities and eventually residential work. This diversification helped me become a well-rounded electrician, capable of tackling any task.

__SkillHero:__ Your journey has taken you through various states and jobs. How has this diverse background shaped your approach to electrical work?

__Steven:__ Moving around a lot as a kid and working in different states exposed me to a variety of work cultures and practices. It taught me adaptability and gave me a broad perspective on problem-solving. These experiences have been invaluable, allowing me to bring diverse solutions to my work as an electrician.

__SkillHero:__ You describe yourself as an "everything" electrician. Between commercial and residential projects, do you have a preference? What have you learned from each?

__Steven:__ I've worked on many commercial projects, like LA Fitness and CVS pharmacies, but residential work has taught me more about problem-solving and customer interaction. I started with commercial work but moved to local projects when the commute became too far. Working by myself on a tire store project while still an apprentice showed me I could handle big projects. Both sectors have their nuances, but I enjoy and learn from both.

__SkillHero:__ What advice do you offer those considering a career in the trades, specifically electrical work?

__Steven:__ You need to really want to do it, and you must have a strong work ethic. Showing up inconsistently won't help you learn. People will lose interest, and you'll fall behind. The trade is constantly evolving, so staying teachable and adaptable is key. It's about dedication and continuous learning.

__SkillHero:__ It's clear you're passionate about mentoring and the trades. How do you see the future of electrical work, and what changes would you like to see in trade education?

__Steven:__ The trade needs passionate newcomers, and I believe that starting trade education in high school could significantly benefit the industry. Not every student is suited for or interested in a four-year college degree. Introducing them to trades early could provide a path to a stable and rewarding career. I also advocate for more apprenticeship opportunities, giving young people hands-on experience and a chance to earn while they learn.

__SkillHero:__ Reflecting on your career, can you share a particularly rewarding project or experience?

__Steven:__ Designing and executing an industrial laundromat from scratch was especially fulfilling. The project required innovative thinking and problem-solving, with no blueprints to guide the process. Witnessing the successful operation of my design and the tangible impact of my work was very satisfying.

__SkillHero:__ For the general public, what advice or tips can you share from your electrical expertise?

__Steven:__ I enjoy giving advice and helping people, and homeowners should strive to understand the basics of their electrical systems. Knowledge empowers them to make safer decisions and handle minor issues confidently. It's not just about safety; it's about enabling homeowners to feel more connected and in control of their living environments. It's about helping others and sharing knowledge, whether it's a small home project or explaining how their electrical systems work. I believe in supporting my community through my skills.

## Q&A with Nora Taylor, IBEW Journeyman Electrician

__SkillHero:__ Nora, reflecting on your career, what would you say are the most fulfilling aspects of trade work, and what benefits do you think are frequently overlooked by the public?

__Nora Taylor:__ The most rewarding aspects of being an electrician are the sense of accomplishment, camaraderie, and pride in craftsmanship. People often overlook the stability, as well as the excellent pay, healthcare, and retirement benefits.

__SkillHero:__ Can you walk us through what inspired you to pursue becoming an IBEW Journeyman Electrician?

__Nora Taylor:__ Well, I have 13 years in the field, and I was non-union for the majority of my career. The local union that I'm now a proud member of organized one of the non-union companies that I worked for. I had to take a test, and I passed as a journeyman. I knew that I needed a serious change. I was working dead-end jobs and struggling with addiction, and my life had spiraled out of control. Getting into the trades was like an awakening for me! I honestly knew right away that I had found my calling.

__SkillHero:__ On that note, what advice would you offer to the younger generation looking to enter the skilled trades?

Nora Taylor: My advice to the younger generation would be never give up on yourself. You can do anything that you put your mind to, I know it sounds cliche, but it's the truth! All it takes is a bit of grit and determination.

__SkillHero:__ Could you share some of the challenges faced during your apprenticeship and how you overcame them?

__Nora Taylor:__ So, I did my apprenticeship non-union, which was a different experience from what a union apprenticeship is like. I worked during the day and went to school two nights a week (that part is similar) but my biggest challenge was that I had to pay for school myself, all my books and everything, and I was told that upon completion, I would be reimbursed half of the money that I spent on school, but I never saw a dime of that reimbursement.

Another challenge that I had to face was being made to feel like I didn't belong by some of the journeymen within the two non-union companies that I worked for. As a woman in the trade, and a black woman at that, I wasn't welcomed by all, but I was by most, and that made things a bit easier. Not all non-union companies are like this. Some are better, and some are worse.

__SkillHero:__ What are some of the most important lessons you learned during your apprenticeship?

__Nora Taylor:__ Some of the biggest lessons I learned are: Always stay teachable!
It's important to be teachable in the trades because things are changing within the construction industry all of the time. You'll never know it all!
Also, be nice! You never know what someone else is going through!

__SkillHero:__ As a trailblazer in a traditionally male-dominated field, what unique perspectives do you bring to your work?

__Nora Taylor:__ I would say that I bring diverse problem-solving skills, as well as attention to detail.

__SkillHero:__ Can you share a moment when you challenged stereotypes or overcame obstacles in your field?

__Nora Taylor:__ On one job, part of my responsibilities was to handle all deliveries. I had all of the apprentices on site available whenever we got large deliveries, and all except two were men. One day, in particular, we got quite a large order of 4-inch rigid pipe. I jumped right in with all of the men and carried a 4-inch rigid pipe on my shoulder, stick by stick until the truck was unloaded.

If that ain't stomping on the stereotype of women not being able to pull their own weight in the trades, then I don't know what is.
SkillHero: What are some of the hobbies or DIY projects you're working on that you're particularly proud of?

__Nora Taylor:__ I'm currently working on my office in our new home. So far, we painted it and I began setting it up just how I want and need it. I'm also going to update the light fixture as well as the switch.

__SkillHero:__ Lastly, how do your skills as an electrician influence your approach to these projects?

__Nora Taylor:__ I love that I can just jump right in and take care of what needs to be done without second-guessing or needing to call someone to come and do it for me. I have a strong mechanical aptitude.

In the years after graduating from Chicago’s Lane Tech High School, Emma Williams was at loose ends and unsure of what she wanted to do with her life. By age 21 she was working in retail as a cashier, but not making enough money to live comfortably and very much uninterested in spending the rest of the working years of her life doing the same thing day after day. Emma wasn’t sure what she was going to do, but she had always been interested in electricity and how flipping a light switch illuminated the room or pressing a button on a TV caused it to turn on. Reflecting on this, Emma took the first step toward a better career as an IBEW Local 134 electrician with a simple Google search for “__how to become an electrician__.”

One of the first results that appeared on the screen was for Chicago Women in Trades, a nonprofit organization with a mission to ensure that all women who want to work with their hands and earn a good living have equal access to information, training and employment opportunities in the trades. When Emma researched the organization and found the Technical Opportunities program, her uncertainty about her professional future began to disappear. In many ways, the program seemed to have been designed specifically for someone like her who had never been mechanically inclined.

Emma quickly signed up for the program, and was soon spending two evenings each week learning about the construction industry, practicing hands-on skills, going through physical training and gaining the technical knowledge to transition into an electrical apprenticeship program by working on math comprehension and brushing up on her English skills. Each Saturday, she joined other participants in the program on a trip to a job site, where they learned about different unionized trades in the construction industry. Although Emma already knew she wanted to pursue a career as a union electrician, she credits Chicago Women in Trades’ program with giving her the foundation she needed to fully commit to pursuing an apprenticeship at the IBEW-NECA Technical Institute.

“__*It was very helpful*__,” Emma says. “*__They teach you the basics and bring you to the door, and then you have to walk through that door.__*”

Walking “through the door” for Emma meant enrolling in the unionized electrical industry’s Trainee Program, a yearlong program that provides an introduction to the electrical industry and practical education for prospective apprentices. The Trainee programs begins with an orientation day, followed by five unpaid eight-hour workplace preparation sessions to prepare trainees for an entry-level job in the electrical construction industry. Trainees are then assigned to an electrical contractor and work on a jobsite for their remaining time in the program, earning a living wage to perform general labor on the project. As someone who had limited exposure to the electrical industry before becoming a trainee, Emma reflects on her time in the program as a great opportunity to learn the basics needed to succeed as an apprentice.

“*__You’re on the jobsite everyday helping move material and getting tools for the journeyperson electricians, and I think that’s really beneficial for those of us who don’t know a lot about the trade coming into the program,__*” Emma says. “__*You’re spending every day getting people what they need on the jobsite, and that’s how you learn.*__”

As part of the Trainee Program, Emma also participated in Jump Start, a 24-hour intensive classroom instruction program that provides seminars on the electrical industry and guidance on how to prepare physically and mentally for construction work, as well as instruction on test preparation and basic work skills to help prepare Trainees to enter the apprenticeship program. Along with the Trainee program, it was exactly what Emma needed to take the next step in her journey to a better career as an IBEW Local 134 electrician.

“*__A lot of the Jump Start program is test prep, and it was very effective,__*” Emma says. “*__When I took the test to get into the apprenticeship program, I got in on my first shot, and Jump Start helped with that a lot. I was not mechanically inclined when I decided I wanted to get into this career, but with all of the preparation before taking the apprenticeship test I learned what it meant to be a good electrician.__*”

Now a third-year apprentice, Emma has continued to build her skills through classes at the IBEW-NECA Technical Institute and gain real-world experience through rotations with signatory electrical contractors. The broad-based nature of the apprenticeship program has also exposed her to different types of electrical work, providing her with a better idea of what she wants to do once she becomes a journeyperson electrician.

“*__When you’re an apprentice you don’t get to choose what you do, which means you’re learning about a lot of different things,__*” Emma says. “*__Because of that, I’ve found that I’m drawn to the way motors work. Once I finish my apprenticeship, that’s where my focus is going to be. There’s a lot more to electrical work than piping and pulling wire, and the programming and motor controls are super fascinating to me. I’m actually in a class for that right now, and I’m learning so much. It’s really exciting.__*”  

As an African-American female who’s also only five feet tall, Emma is defying a number of stereotypes about what a member of the construction industry looks like. And though she notes some of the challenges inherent in not fitting what many people might mistakenly consider the “typical” electrician, none of those challenges have dissuaded her from continuing to pursue a career in the trade. Particularly because it’s a path that will allow her to do something she’s passionate about while enjoying the many benefits of a well-paying career with ongoing education and training opportunities as an IBEW Local 134 electrician. She’s also paying it forward to help others like her who might not know that a career in the trade is a possibility.

“*__I feel like to get more women involved, we basically just need to be exposed to it,__*” Emma says.  “*__When I was in high school, I didn’t know anything about the trades. Once you learn about it and what’s possible, I think there are a lot of women who would find it interesting and something that they want to pursue. Whenever Chicago Women in Trades is doing their electrician day, I always volunteer. This is a career that more women should know about.__*”

In our __A Career in Plumbing__ series, we talk to plumbers about how they got started in the industry, their passions and how they’re approaching the future of the trade. Next is Peter Joseph, licensed master plumber and owner of Two7 Plumbing in Newnan, Georgia.

### Tell us about your plumbing career, from your first exposure to the trade to training to where you are now.
*My dad is a plumber and would take me on jobs with him when I was a kid. As far back as I can recall, if I wasn’t watching and learning, I was watching and learning; I was going to work for actual time. I helped him build a larger business to provide for his family without him having to work before I started my small company.*  

### How did working with your dad shape your experience with the trade?  What were the most important lessons you learned from him?
*Growing up in the industry with my dad, I learned firsthand that being a plumber is honorable. Sometimes society looks down on us because we don’t work a traditional desk job, but my dad showed me that you could have a very fulfilling life taking care of your family by taking care of the needs of others.*  

*He always taught me the value of hard work and high-quality work. He often said, “There is a right way to something and a wrong way to do something.” It was essential to him to make sure we did our task the right way, regardless of if the easier, wrong way would be “good enough.” That has also stuck with me and become the heart of how I operate my own company.*

### How does plumbing allow you to exercise your strengths?
*Running my own plumbing company allows me to specialize in what I do best. I can provide top-quality to my customers by taking on the jobs I’ve elected to train specifically for.*  

*Being my boss also means being able to pick my own material and installation methods. This all adds to my ability to offer a high-end solution with long-term peace of mind.*

### What are the biggest challenges and rewards of working in plumbing, based on your experience?
*The biggest challenges I’ve encountered typically are the jobs where I’m going behind another installer to correct their work. By the time I get called in, these jobs are usually so butchered that they become much larger than they otherwise needed to be and often require much more thought and consideration for proper re-installation.*  

*Likewise, the most significant rewards often come from these same jobs. When you accomplish a professional solution to a job that was a real head-scratcher, you feel very proud of your accomplishments.*

### How have you seen plumbing evolve over the years? What excites you and worries you the most about the future of the trade?
*Regarding the evolution of plumbing, we’ve seen many manufacturers working to design more user-friendly products. We’ve got brands like SharkBite that create push-style fittings. Another product, PEX piping, is ideal for many scenarios where you can’t easily use rigid pipe material, and there are now multiple high-quality systems compatible with copper piping that does not require a torch. My lungs appreciate not having to breathe in those fumes constantly!*

*We’re also constantly coming up with safer systems. There is now less lead in our products than ever, and companies like Cash Acme offer options to help ensure we don’t have bacterial buildup in our water tanks.*  

*If anything worries me about the future of the trade, we are currently losing more plumbers than we are taking in. There are already more jobs, and plumbers can accept them. At the current rate, this is only going to get worse.*

### How did you, as an essential worker, navigate the pandemic last year, and were there any key takeaways from that season?
*The COVID-19 outbreak was scary for everyone and required me to rethink how I was doing business. I began wearing a mask to each job — I still do, in fact — I initially only accepted urgent jobs while offering to walk customers through anything DIY friendly. I posted tutorials on my YouTube channel for many simple jobs I would get.*  

*As it became clear that COVID wouldn’t disappear right away, I ultimately went back to running calls as usual while continuing to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), but my wife and I still monitor the COVID situation carefully. The two of us are vaccinated, but we have a little girl at home who we love dearly, and we want to do everything we can to keep her safe.*  

*I’m not yet at a point where I can say if any particular changes made because of COVID will be permanent. I’m still exercising safety measures and constantly following the updates from the medical community. Perhaps one day, when COVID is truly a thing of the past, these additional safety measures may be too.*

### What are you passionate about outside of your craft?
*When I’m not plumbing, I enjoy playing my electric guitar. I’ve played guitar for over 15 years, which greatly fulfills me. I also enjoy kayaking with my family. We often go to local lakes but have traveled a bit outside of our hometown to check out other cool locations to kayak as well.*  

### Why should people consider a job in plumbing? What does it take to succeed in this field? And what advice would you give to someone interested in entering plumbing?
*In my opinion, there are a lot of reasons to consider a career in plumbing. People sometimes have a negative outlook on plumbing, as if it’s a lower-choice option that one should choose only as a last result. This couldn’t be further from the truth though*.

*I love what I do! While the industry has many different facets, I selected residential service plumbing. I get to work with my hands and tackle a different job every day. I’m at multiple homes each day, which really ma time fly. I enjoy working with my hands to solve a problem for someone. Most plumbers get paid very well and even get paid to learn. If this sounds like an enjoyable career, that’s because it is!*

*As long as you have a good work ethic, show up on time and do what you say you will, you’ll go far in this industry.*

### How did you first hear about SharkBite? Which products do you use today, and in which applications?
*I don’t remember the first time I heard of SharkBite, but I know it was entirely some time ago since I grew up in this industry. Today I use the SharkBite brass push fittings as a transition between pipe materials, depending on the situation.*  

*It’s my personal opinion that SharkBite is the best option when transitioning away from polybutylene, as the push fittings won’t stress and strain the piping by crimping onto it. I’m also not a fan of CPVC piping and typically use a SharkBite fitting to transition to something better. SharkBite EvoPEX™ fittings are great too! I use them frequently when working with PEX piping.*

He is at the heart of operations, ensuring equipment performs when needed. He is the pillar of our service department. He is an Avinash Narine-Jaikaran, Toromont Cat heavy equipment technician, and things wouldn’t run smoothly without him.

__How long have you been a heavy equipment technician?__

I’ve been a technician for about three years. My Toromont apprenticeship program is almost over, and I’m about to take my license exam (Red Seal). I was supposed to graduate in April, but things got delayed because of COVID. Before that, I completed a 2-year mechanics program (Heavy Duty Equipment) at Centennial College.

__How would you describe the apprenticeship program at Toromont Cat?__

Apprentices have access to a lot of support, such as on-the-job training designed explicitly for apprentices. The program also offers a lot of variety for apprentices and allows, allowing each out to different techs and access to several references. Another significant aspect of the program, which few people know about, is that the training takes place in the shop, the classroom and online. An added benefit for apprentices is the ability to continue to follow training sessions after being licensed. They (Toromont) don’t forget about you once you’re licensed; they can support and expand your development.

__Do you think your current job will differ once you’re licensed?__

The job won’t be that much different once I’m licensed; I think there’ll jusless variety. Once you are licensed, you’re on your own – no one will be standing by your side, watching you. You will be asked to perform certain tasks classified under a specific type or amount of experience. For instance, one task may be assigned to a licensed technician who has the skills to complete the job, while another task may be assigned to a level 1 apprentice or level 2 apprentice if they have performed that task before while being supervised. As an apprentice technician, you must build your experience, and you’ll eventually perform licensed work monitored or validated by a licensed tech. After that, the choice is yours: if you choose to go further, you can take steps to obtain your license, which is what I decided to do. When you reach the end of the apprenticeship, you understand the work and how to do it.

__What made you choose to become a heavy equipment mechanic?__

The technician gene runs in my family. My dad is a heavy equipment tech. As for me, I was very passionate about the automotive industry. I loved to work on cars, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to do that all day and then come home to fix my car. I wavered a lot when it came to a career choice. I even ventured into aviation but found it a bit intimidating. I eventually started visiting my dad at work and fell in love with the job and equipment. I admire the complexity of the tasks and how well technicians can complete them. In my opinion, heavy equipment is the one trade that brings everything together: heavy equipment has hydraulics, which is similar to plumbing equipment, and it also has electrical components, just like in the equipment an electrician works on. And then there’s the mechanical aspect, which is much more than a simple automobile. To me, heavy equipment has it all.

__In your opinion, what does becoming a heavy equipment tech take?__

To get into this trade, you need an open-minded mindset. You also have to think about safety, which is critical. Many of our tasks are intimidating, but there’s always a safer way. This career might be perfect if you love working with your hands and care about safety. You should enjoy fixing and figuring things out and being curious about their work.

 __What is a typical day for you?__

Honestly, every day is different. That is what is fantastic about this trade. It’s very versatile and filled with many different options to choose from. It can be pleasantly unpredictable. One day, you may remove an engine; the next, you diagnose hydraulics on a machine. The days are usually planned by the supervisors and lead hands, and they will assign work according to your skill set and in line with your development needs. For example, if you’ve worked on a couple of engines before, you’ll be asked to work on axles since that will allow you to develop your skills. So unless you’re working on a big project projected to last a long time, each day will involve different tasks. Sometimes, you may work on one machine for an entire month (in the case of an overhaul job, for instance). There’s something great about working on a task like that because you know exactly what the day entails and what is required of you. You can just keep working away. But whatever the tasks are, the days are planned very well, which is nice.

__So, do you come in the morning and have your supervisor hand you a list of tasks that need to be done that day?__

Yes. We meet every morning to discuss safety (we call these our Safety Talk meetings) and share our opinions and experiences. We then have a morning stretching session. After that, we complete a pre-job safety card, which entails any risks or hazards we may encounter while on the job, reminding us to be mindful during our tasks. We then review the list with our lead hands and obtain any information about our tasks. This is our chance to get details regarding our work for the day.

__In your case, do you perform most of your work in the shop?__

Yes. Near the end of your apprenticeship, you may be asked to work on a customer site, but those tasks are usually reserved for more experienced techs. Initially, it can be a little intimidating because it’s a brand-new environment, and there are more things to consider. But you eventually become used to it, and some techs discover how much they like it, which allows them to transition to a field service job.

__What would you say is the main or most common challenge you are faced with at work?__

Sometimes, the main challenge is dealing with the machine itself. Not everything we work on is new and clean. The equipment we receive is often packed with dirt, salt, or filth (i.e., a garbage removal machine). When a job doesn’t go as smoothly as planned, it can be frustrating because it feels as though you’re taking one step forward and two steps back. I can get frustrated when working on parts isn’t as simple as I’d imagined. But other than that, the work is pretty straightforward.

__Are new technologies making your work easier?__

Yes, they make it easier for technicians to perform diagnostics. Most older machines don't have a lot of electronics and sensors, but the newer machines are loaded with them. Almost every part of the machine has a sensor or electronic. So troubleshooting is much more on newer machines than on older ones. Sometimes, it’s a win-lose situation because you can quickly diagnose a machine but have trouble repairing it. For example, older machines used to have 3 ECM (Electronic Control Module), but newer ones can have 17 ECM[HL1], making things more complicated.

__Do you have an anecdote or a story to share?__

It’s not a story per se, but something that sticks with me. When we have our morning discussion, we sometimes hear about events in other branches, on customer sites, or with colleagues. These stories usually involve challenges techs faced or accidents that happened, but they always make me think about how I should handle those particular tasks. I remember the story of a tech who didn’t lift the machine correctly or didn’t perform a task correctly, and that clicked for me. Sometimes, we hear horror stories of people who got severely injured. We work with big machines, heavy loads, and moving parts, representing a few risks.  I haven't dealt with significant problems or accidents, and I'm happy about that. But I register everything I hear!

__How would you qualify the safety standard at Toromont?__

I think Toromont places a heavy emphasis on safety, especially when a new tech joins the team. They are always surprised by the measures we must take (what we must wear, the processes we must follow, etc.). We must develop specific practices and adopt new habits; these safety measures soon become second nature. Toromont is exceptionally diligent regarding safety, and we are all encouraged to step back to see how we can improve safety even more the next time. Safety is an important aspect here, and we talk about it a lot, whether it’s through sharing our experiences, analyzing incidents, or getting corporate training. It’s a constant.

__What do you like the most about your work?__

I love the environment, and I love the people I work with. Enjoying the people and the atmosphere is an essential factor for me. I have no hesitation in asking someone a question or asking them for help. The people I work with that make my day go by a lot faster, which is essential to me.

__In your tasks, what do you prefer doing?__

I love working on engines. That's my go-to.

__What do you think machine owners should know about?__

Cleaning and maintaining their machines make a big difference in the long run. That's my most extensive advice for our customers – to keep an eye on maintenance, ensure their machines are in good working order, and not let minor issues get bigger. Increase the longevity of your machine by making sure maintenance is done regularly. This is important. I’ve had many experiences where a machine came into the shop to be taken apart, and the repair took much longer and was more expensive because parts seized or pins were not greased. The less the machine has been maintained, the more work it will need.

__If you were given a free Cat machine of your choice, what would it be?__

I would pick the giant loader they have, which is the 994. Loaders are amazing machines. I love them.

__Do you have any final words about being a heavy equipment tech at Toromont Cat?__

We always think about safety first and must keep an open mind because learning never ends because of all the different machines and technology we work with. We don’t second-guess ourselves and ask for help or a different set of eyes. We perform most of our tasks alone but work as a team. That is one of our main strengths here at Toromont.
