# Q&A Interview with Stacey Mrva, Metal Sculptor

__SkillHero:__ Tell us about your journey into metalwork and the trades. Did you have a traditional career in the trades before venturing into teaching and art?

__Stacey Mrva:__ I actually came to welding through art. I was exposed to a lot of different mediums of art in high school which lead me into jewelry making, and then that evolved into studying metal smithing at Syracuse University. There, I fell in love with welding and knew it was what I wanted to do. I was essentially self-taught, as the university just provided the equipment and I learned by doing. After graduating, my parents bought me a Miller 185 welder, which I still use today.

__Stacey Mrva:__ For over 25 years, I focused on my own artistic and functional metalwork such as custom railings and furniture, but it's feast or famine being an artist. I was working a day job in management in retail, but wanted to find a way to bring in more revenue so I could quit my job and focus on doing the thing I loved and enjoyed - welding.

During the pandemic, my husband and I moved from Rochester to the Finger Lakes, where we found a property with a barn perfect for a metalwork shop. The barn had an ironwood tree growing near it, which felt like destiny, and thus, [Ironwood Studios Inc.](https://ironwoodstudiosinc.com/ "Ironwood Studios website") was born. We envisioned a creative space where people could come, learn, and create. Since then, I've been conducting Women's Welding Workshops and have taught over 600 people in the past two years.

__Stacey Mrva:__ The workshops are project-based, so everyone leaves with something they've created. The projects are designed to ensure participants feel accomplished. I cater to all different skill levels and walks of life in my shop, from beginners who may be scared to hold a welding torch to those who take to welding naturally. The goal is to build confidence and create a supportive environment where women can learn and thrive.

__SkillHero:__ What skills do you think are most important for someone beginning in welding?

__Stacey Mrva:__ Patience is crucial. Welding is a skill that requires perseverance. It's important to be patient with yourself and not get discouraged by initial failures. __Stacey Mrva:__ The industry is becoming more open to women, but it still requires resilience. You need to be prepared to prove yourself, which can ultimately make you better at what you do. The skills and confidence you gain will be invaluable, and you'll find that you're sought after in your field because of your dedication and hard work.

__Stacey Mrva:__ We're renovating the barn to create more space for events and possibly overnight workshops where participants can work on larger projects. I also want to develop a funded summer program to offer free workshops for young women, showing them what's possible and building their confidence through welding.

## Q&A with Drew Huey, Stone Mason
__SkillHero:__ Tell us about your journey in the skilled trades. How did you get started?

__Drew Huey:__ The [Warren County Career Center](https://www.wcsdpa.org/o/wccc "Warren County Career Center website")’s welding program was a game-changer for me. It not only provided a practical skill set and sparked my passion for the trades, but also gave me the extra credits I needed to graduate. I didn’t learn the best in a traditional classroom setting, so a hands-on learning environment was a perfect alternative.
The skills I was taught opened up opportunities, and toward the end of high school, I began working part-time at a construction company applying the skills that I was learning in my welding program. Once I graduated, it evolved into a [full-time welding role](https://app.skillhero.works/career-explorer/trades/welder "SkillHero Career Explorer: Welder").

But for me, after a few years of welding, I was growing tired of it. I admired the mason crew, often seeing them and other tradespeople coming in and out of the yard while I was stuck somewhere working on a weld. My company allowed me to shadow the masons and soon they started taking me along on jobs. My first job with them was working on a huge stone house. It was tough, but through that project I fell in love with masonry.

__SkillHero:__ What aspects of masonry do you find most rewarding?

__Drew Huey:__ Overall, the work is exciting and different every day, and I love the physical and creative aspects of it. The most rewarding part is stepping back at the end of the day and seeing what I’ve accomplished. It’s amazing to see a structure you’ve built from the ground up. Masonry is also a valuable career path because there’s always work—chimneys, foundations, fireplaces. Plus, it’s physically engaging, keeping me fit while continuing to work on my trade.

__SkillHero:__ How did you hone your craft in masonry?

__Drew Huey:__ There was a steep learning curve, especially with measuring and ensuring everything fits perfectly the first time. I remember one of my bosses saying laying stone is easy, but there’s so much more to it—like measuring out so you don’t end up with a weird measurement in the middle, and making sure everything works right.

There’s a lot of math and technique that goes into it, so learning from experienced masons was crucial. My first bosses were tough but taught me a lot about breaking bonds, doing corners, and estimating costs and materials. You can always watch YouTube tutorials, but hands-on experience and learning from seasoned professionals make a huge difference.

__SkillHero:__ What advice would you give to someone interested in masonry?

__Drew Huey:__ Get your hands on some basic tools like a trowel, slicker, and grinder, and start applying for any construction jobs to get your foot in the door. Skilled labor is in high demand. Getting involved, asking questions, and learning on the job are key.

When considering specialties, repointing (repairing masonry that’s already done) is a great place to start. It gives you a good idea of how something was created, and through fixing it, you’ll gain an understanding of what could’ve been done better in the first place to improve the quality of the stonework.

__SkillHero:__ How has the industry changed since you started?

__Drew Huey:__ Everything has gotten more expensive, and there’s a shift towards using cheaper materials like stick-on stone, which is like molded concrete made to look like stone. While it’s more affordable and in demand, I prefer working with real stone. It’s more authentic, rewarding and durable. Technology has also advanced, making some tasks easier, but the essence of masonry remains the same.

__SkillHero:__ What’s it like running your own business versus working for someone else?

__Drew Huey:__ There’s pros and cons. Running your own business gives you freedom and the potential for higher earnings, but it comes with a lot of responsibilities and stress. You have to manage materials, handle clients, and ensure everything runs smoothly. Working for someone else is more relaxed—you just show up and do your job without worrying about the logistics, but you earn less.

When I am working for myself, it is a huge mental load. You’re responsible for every step of the job, including financial responsibilities like creating estimates and calculating taxes. But working for someone else, all those things are taken care of.

__SkillHero:__ What are your future plans in masonry?

__Drew Huey:__ I aim to get back into running my own business but with a team. Working alone can be tough, and having a team makes the work more enjoyable and efficient. My brother is a carpenter, and we’re talking about starting a construction company, offering a range of services from masonry to carpentry to welding. My future is all about creating a relaxed, fun, and productive work environment.

When vocational classes were phased out at my school while growing up, I gravitated towards chemistry for its hands-on lab work. Throughout my academic career, I continued metalworking, which eventually brought me to blacksmithing. The allure of combining my passions of working with hot forged steel and teaching led me to begin offering classes to spread knowledge about my craft.

__Will:__ Being a tower climber is a job isn't for those afraid of heights - you’re climbing on an antenna hundreds or even thousands of feet up in the air. Sometimes an elevator or helicopter to take you up, but I've I've yet to convince anyone to fly me up past the 450-foot mark; I've always had to make the climb myself.

That being said, I love every bit of it—the challenges, the heights, the unique experiences each climb brings. The idea of being 1,000 or even 2,000 feet in the air excites me. The highest I’ve been is 550 feet, and even that was pretty exhilarating. It’s not just a job; it’s an adventure every single day.

__Will:__ Lineworkers are running power, [working on those electric lines and poles you often see](https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/inside-world-tower-climber-skillhero-spotlight-we-are-skillhero-fbkde/?trackingId=%2B%2Bbg2WI%2FYIbF4%2BDt%2BB43QQ%3D%3D#:~:text=working%20on%20those%20electric%20lines%20and%20poles%20you%20often%20see). As a tower climber, my world revolves around communication. Whether it's maintaining cell towers, ensuring 911 systems are up and running, or working on broadcast, which means anything from your AM/FM radio stations to emergency broadcast systems.

It’s a bit staggering when you think about it; there are about 120,000 linemen out there in America, but only around 14,000 of us tower climbers—or tower techs, as some like to call us.

__SkillHero:__ What got you into tower climbing?

__Will:__ I started back in 2013. I was [roofing](https://app.skillhero.works/career-explorer/trades/roofer) and hated it. My particular work environment was just too negative. So, I applied for a tower climbing job and got it. Started at $10 an hour, and from there, it was all about learning and moving up. I’ve worked all over the country, from Arkansas to Oregon, and even had an offer to go to Puerto Rico after the hurricane.

But through it all, I've been learning—constantly. The job's required me to take a myriad of classes, keeping up with certifications every year or two. Now, I’ve racked up close to 12 certifications, ranging from CPR and first aid to more specialized training that allows me to teach others about climbing, rigging, and safety practices.

__SkillHero:__ Can you talk more about the certifications needed for your job?

__Will:__ Yeah, there are quite a few. You’ve got CPR, first aid, and then there's rigging, how to inspect your PPE (personal protective equipment), and understanding OSHA regulations. It's a mix of online courses and hands-on training. For instance, CPR certification requires proving your skills at a facility. And then there's specialized training like the NWSA, which involves both written and practical tests.

__SkillHero:__ What’s the incentive for accumulating all of these certifications?

__Will:__ Beyond the subcontract requirements, they ensure everyone on a tower knows exactly what they're doing. It’s about safety, efficiency, and, admittedly, the pay bump that comes with increased knowledge and responsibility.

__SkillHero:__ How has the technology evolved in your field?
Will: The telecommunications landscape has drastically changed since I started back in 2013, with advancements from LTE to 5G, and now there's talk about 6G on the horizon.

In my line of work, these technological evolutions mean constant learning and adapting. For instance, we've transitioned from 2G antennas to installing sophisticated LTE systems. This shift isn't just about technology; it impacts the physical aspect of our jobs too. Older 3G antennas, combined with amplifiers, could weigh around 150 pounds, whereas modern dual antennas might weigh double that. The balancing act of installing these heavy components high up on a tower can be precarious, challenging, and sometimes dangerous if the right safety precautions aren't followed.

__Will:__ One vivid memory involves a decommissioning job where we had to carefully balance the old and new systems on a tower. The addition of new, heavier equipment nearly caused a tower boom to tilt dramatically. In another instance, during a 911 system upgrade, I realized I had free climbed part of the tower by mistake, a risky slip in attention that reinforced the importance of double-checking every safety measure.

The most intense experiences often involve emergencies or unique setups, like using a helicopter for installations to save time and money over traditional crane setups. These moments highlight the unpredictable nature of tower climbing, from narrowly avoiding accidents to managing the logistics of heavy equipment installations.

And then there was the advent of 5G amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought an unexpected aspect to our jobs: dealing with conspiracy theories and public backlash, including threats and vandalism. It was a stark reminder of the misconceptions surrounding our work and the critical role communication technologies play in modern life, even as they're misunderstood by the very communities we serve.

__SkillHero:__ How do you keep up with all the changes occurring in the trade?
Will: It's about staying certified and keeping up with training. The certifications help us understand the new technologies, how to install them safely, and ensure they work as intended. It’s a lot, but it’s part of the job.

__SkillHero:__ How did you get started?

__Will:__ I hit the internet hard, applying for just about any job I could find because, well, I needed one, and you can't be too picky in those situations, right? At that time, and even now to some extent, the industry's been on the slower side since last summer, but there's talk it'll pick up in a couple of months. That led me to looking into NWSA certifications and searching for jobs on Google. The thing is, this job requires you to be open to travel. When you think about it, there are more communication sites out there than there are climbers to work on them.

Through social media, like Instagram, I've connected with a bunch of other climbers. I've even been able to help some folks land jobs. And yeah, there are female climbers in this space too, proving the job's about skill, not gender.

__SkillHero:__ What you recommend tower climbing to someone looking for a new opportunity?

__Will:__ Jumping into this field back in 2013 was a game-changer for me. It's an incredible opportunity to soak up knowledge on so many fronts. You get into the nitty-gritty of how things work, like [getting a crash course in electrical engineering](https://app.skillhero.works/career-explorer/trades/electrician), diving deep into the mechanics of how our phones keep us connected. It’s more than just climbing; it’s understanding the backbone of communication, almost like [being an iron worker](https://app.skillhero.works/career-explorer/trades/ironworker). You’re laying the rebar, pouring the concrete, stacking the towers, and then bringing them to life with technology.

This job teaches you invaluable lessons, too, like discerning which mobile device to pick based on its band compatibility—knowledge that can make you the smartest shopper in the room. You start to see through the sales pitches, armed with firsthand experience of how these bands operate in the real world.

But sure, the heights can be daunting. It's easy to look up and only see the danger, not the beauty of the job. And yeah, it demands a lot of travel, which isn’t for everyone. But think about it—you get to see the world from perspectives most people can only dream of: 200 feet, 500 feet, even 2,000 feet up. It’s a different world up there. Amidst all the noise and chaos on the ground, the top of a tower is peaceful. It’s just you, the sky, and a sense of tranquility that’s hard to find anywhere else.

Honestly, if you ask me, this isn’t just a job; it’s the best trade out there. The view, the peace, the knowledge—it’s unmatched. And while the heights might scare some away, those who take the leap find a world up there that’s just serene.
